Bush Tetras – Boom In The Night (Original Studio Recordings 1980-1983)

★★★★☆ = Quality release and suggested listening

What’s it sound like?
New York’s version of early Clash: dark and divey.

Thoughts
This is a great record, right up there with other punk and post-punk of the era. At times they can sound like more modern dance punk but with a refreshing straight-forwardness that I think is lost in current bands.

I mention the clash because they incorporate a world/dub sound that I think the clash does so well.

Slow Mass – On Watch

★★★★☆ = Quality release and suggested listening

What’s it sound like?
Varied punk: quiet personal songs to pop to post-hardcore.

Thoughts
I dig the dynamic nature of this band who is able to accomplish hardcore as well as personal moments. True post-hardcore (emo) revivalists, this reminds me a lot of bands I grew up listening to in the 90’s.

The Fall – This Nation’s Saving Grace

★★★★☆ = Quality release and suggested listening

What’s it sound like?

Dive bar erudite rantings over raw distorted jangly 80s rock

Thoughts

Might just be the quintessential 80s post-punk album.

X – More Fun In The New World

★★☆☆☆ = Eh, fine

What’s it sound like?

New Wave Punk, erudite bar hero

Thoughts

Another heavily played wfmu album. X is an intriguing band, reminds me of new wave punk like later Talking Heads. Instrumentation has a good energy if nothing that special.

Lyrically distinct, I like the straightforwardness and humor of the lyrics, cynicism isn’t done as well today.

Not my thing but planning to check out more by the band.

Show Me The Body – Body War

⭐⭐⭐⭐

What’s it sound like?

A hardcore punk trio playing metal rap.

Thoughts

bursting with ideas and energy, this is a modern post hardcore classic. One of the best implementations of metal rap since RATM I can think of

Parquet Courts – Human Performance

⭐⭐⭐

I really like this band and support their style of punk, owing a lot to 80s influences like the replacements and feelies. Lyrically it has a well-read feel that I find is missing with today’s lyricists.

I can see spending more time with this album and liking it more in time, definitely a band I’d like to see live.
