DJ Koze – Knock Knock

★★★☆☆ = Good!

What’s it sound like?
DJ koze’s undeniable house – quizzical hip hop beats meet German techno.

Thoughts
As much as I want to call every Koze release essential (seriously kozela thank you for the music) I think he’s at his best as a remixer. This album has some great peaks ( baby, planet hase, pick up) and the rest is solid. But Koze has operated at a master level that isn’t necessarily shown here. I do like the g-funk flourishes on the opener and Jesus. Great album, sunny drunk.

Deetron – DJ-Kicks

★★★☆☆ = Good!

What’s it sound like?

Energetic house mix

Thoughts

A dynamic mix that builds in intensity. This is decidedly modern house but incorporates a number of styles and takes large influence from 90s golden age. The later half isn’t quite as good, track selection trades sexy for energy that I don’t particularly like. Ends with a perfect pair. I think this would play well with mature fans looking for something fresh.

My one complaint is he hops between styles and songs too frequently, never really settling on anything for longer than a minute. At times this is fun but I do wish some songs would’ve been stretched out more.

Studio OST – Scenes (2012-2015)

★★★☆☆ = Good!

What’s it sound like?

Bassy hip minimal house.

Thoughts

Galcher lustwerk makes a pretty solid minimal house record. It’s not outstanding but I like his style direction and overall sound. This is an accessible introduction to his brand of house.

Sports – Modern Species

★★★☆☆ = Good!

What’s it sound like?

Reminds me of a more clubby version of the orb or 808 state.

Thoughts

Philip sherburne wrote the pitchfork review which covers things well ( https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/dj-sports-modern-species/ )

Tracks cover a range of influences (trance, dub, breakbeat house). It has a club vibe but extended.

This would play very well in the panther room of output. I like fertile Crescent which pitchfork called one of the house tracks.

Ricky Eat Acid – Talk To You Soon

★★★★☆ = Quality release and suggested listening

What’s it sound like?
A scatter of modern electro styles: trap, Blood Diamonds / Grimes art-electro, pensive piano bits, confessional lyrics.

Thoughts
Another good one from Ricky, this is the third album I’ve heard of his and I continue to be impressed by his catalog.

The constant change is what makes this such an engaging album. He’s not a particularly good songwriter but strings this together into a great collage.

Greeen Linez – Izu King Street

⭐⭐⭐

Vaporwave inspired electro with a constant ‘house’ bump. This is probably their best and most accessible album so far.

Everything But The Girl – Walking Wounded

⭐⭐⭐

Though it’s a watered down version of Trip-hop, and Tracey’s lyrics are missing the wit found on their earlier albums, it’s still a solid collection of sad break-up songs from this lovely duo.
