Out Hud – S.T.R.E.E.T. D.A.D.

★★★☆☆ = Good!

Sounds like?

spacey instrumental electro dance punk

Moods

Psychedelic dance music

Thoughts

Two of the members went onto major things with !!! And LCD Soundsystem. This LP has the jam band sound without the jamming. It's music made by a traditional rock quartet but as if their trying to sound like a spaced-out electro project with dub sounds and house goodness weaved in. There's a 'raw' element here that provides a nice character, feels very human. It's key as instrumentals acts like this can someone's feel a little too clinical or impersonal without the vocal touch.

I'd be really interested in seeing Out Hud live as there are so many jumping off points for jam noodling. As a studio thing it works and it's interesting hearing it so many years later as their sound has gone on to influence lots of other bands from the disco biscuits to pretty much the entire DFA roster.

Kornél Kovács – Stockholm Marathon

★★★☆☆ = Good!

Sounds like?

Hip glitchy dreamy electro with Rebecca and Fiona vocals

Moods

A dance record for dreaming about the dancefloor

Thoughts

Tight. There is a certain overall pleasantness here (maybe it's the key? Really prevalent). Glitchy. Super fresh. For the kids but not trendy, classy. Moves.

Just noticed Rebecca and Fiona are the vocals on a bunch of these tracks which I think is an awesome pairing. Their first record, think synth pop, is a guilty pleasure and it's nice to hear them on solid productions here. Hope they continue working on more fruitful projects.

Roman Flügel – Fatty Folders

★★★☆☆ = Good!

Sounds like?

cerebral minimal electro

Moods

Memorable melodic minimal electro, a refreshing listen

Thoughts

Nice first-half, on par with any good minimal cerebral IDM (four tet, etc). The improviser is an interesting piece in the practice of tension building song writing. Otherwise a pleasant listen overall that tapers off toward the end.

Peggy Gou cites this as a record that inspired her to seriously start producing music. As this was released in 2011, it's interesting to learn about the recent records that are proving to be influential on the younger generation. It doesn't sound that experimental to me but it feels like a very honest reference.

K-Lone – Sine Language

★★★☆☆ = Good!

Sounds like?

Gritty hip electro house

Moods

Raw textures compliment strong productions on this hip minimal electro ep

Thoughts

Resident Advisor said it well:

Sine Language features four very different productions, putting K-Lone's versatility on display. The title track draws on a vintage Detroit style, mixing electro beats and hip-hop vocals—hardly a novel idea in 2019. But a sweet, subtly out-of-place ambient breakdown interrupts the flow at the perfect moment, keeping things interesting. "Batacuda" and "Bells" are experiments at slower tempos, something we've seen a lot of from UK-based producers in recent years, particularly those in the Timedance camp. "Batacuda" floats along, emanating a drowsy humidity, while "Bells" is moody and thoughtful, coated in a chiming haze. "Missed Calls," a carefully crafted piece of taught, polyrhythmic braindance, is probably the best track on the EP. With this kind of eclecticism, a producer takes the risk of spreading themselves too thinly, but not K-Lone. He brings an intelligence and inventiveness to everything he does, unifying his work and making it essential listening every time.

Octo Octa – Where Are We Going?

★★★☆☆ = Good!

Sounds like?

Energetic electro

Moods

Cerebral yet fun

Thoughts

enjoyable mash of some of favorite styles. Has the energy and flow of a set at times though these are extended cuts. Fleeting moments of freedom brings to mind a fun 'bouncy' dance night out, love the playful loop backs.

Anthony Naples – Take Me With You

★★★☆☆ = Good!

Sounds like?

spacey shimmery electro with a pleasant beat

Moods

Cerebral

Thoughts

Upbeat with a downtempo dubby reverb. Has a nice flow. Tracks are short with new ideas ebbing into one another, like this approach compared with other producers who sometimes let an idea play on for too long.

Solid record.

Florian Kupfer – I Feel You

★★★☆☆ = Good!

Sounds like?

deep lofi house

Moods

Rough LES basement electro

Thoughts

Overall I like the general sound here more than the individual songs. I feel these would work best in mixes, appearing as moments in some type of raw performance setting. All tracks utilize this slight distortion as if the drum pad got a small spill of beer on it and the effects are just slightly warped; things are coming through but something is slightly off. It's rough not so much in tone like industrial productions but in polish as if he's making this live; letting the drum machine go on for too long alone on lemming for instance. It's ultimately effective at building the tension through an uncertainty as it he figuring out how these tracks are going to work.

Really dig the first track with a moody mournful vocal that stood out with that distorted bass thump.

Bullion – Blue Pedro

★★★☆☆ = Good!

Sounds like?

modern electro folk with a synth 80s nod and eurobeat

Moods

Coastal electro folk

Thoughts

Tight ep, tracks loop quick guitar or synth lines and layer electro production bits on top. Nothing revolutionary but it grabs with it's immediacy and just enough variation.

I like the guitar soloing on spin2glory.

House of Feelings – New Lows

★★★☆☆ = Good!

Sounds like?

modern productions of golden age NY house with observational, self reflective lyrics delivered in mantra like form.

Moods

Tired of the club but still wanna dance

Thoughts

This feels like a genuine record. It takes a house sound that I remember, updates the production (using precise songwriting) and adds great vocals singing about thoughts / anxieties that I ruminate over (love, technological anxieties).

Jamming on: most tracks but ‘you ain't so big’ and ‘body’ make a nice pair.

Boundary – Fantasmagórico

★★★☆☆ = Good!

Sounds like?

indie produced synth electro.

Moods

Modern version of the Bandersnatch soundtrack

Thoughts

80s and basic. Glitchy vaporware with ambient synths. Video Games. Has a Spanish rhythmic flair to it though I'm not always crazy about the sequenced drum machine, gives it a robotic feel. Draws from daft punk acid house at times. IDM. Arpeggios remind me of vintage prog rock.
