Folamour – Umami

★★★☆☆ = Good!

Sounds like?

Fun house with a positive vibe and featuring classic r&b samples

Moods

Hip DJ at a trendy lounge

Thoughts
I like this. Obvious samples like ‘get into the party’ integrate well with his brand of house. I could picture this as background music at a hip party.

I prefer the instrumental and more rhythmic ‘look at me or I’ll steal your eyes’ utilizing a rich drumline that reminds me of an accessible moodymann.

Planning to check out more by this dude.

Heathered Pearls – Detroit, MI 1997-2001

★★☆☆☆ = Eh, fine

Sounds like?
Minimal Detroit techno

Moods
Night driving

Thoughts
Pretty OK for Detroit techno. The album closer, The Packard Plant, is the standout track.

Injury Reserve – Drive It Like It’s Stolen

★★☆☆☆ = Eh, fine

Sounds like?

Aggressive bo1da beats with j 5 raps

Thoughts
While I like the production the emcees just weren’t up to par in my book.

Huncho Jack – Huncho Jack, Jack Huncho

★★☆☆☆ = Eh, fine

Sounds like?
A super group of ATL stutter trap style.

Moods
Braggadocio

Thoughts
I say super group but that doesn’t mean you’re necessarily getting the best work from these guys. Kind of like when the all-star teams play each other in sports: sick lineup but mediocre outing.

Some great singles here (production on ‘Dubai shit’ is a+) but lots of fat, can only take so much of the style.

Colin Stetson – All This I Do For Glory

★★★☆☆ = Good!

Sounds like?
Deep brooding sax laid on top of repetitive songs.

Moods
David Lynch

Thoughts
Colin Stetson is an impressive player. His distinct approach to the sax utilizing circular breathing and tiny microphones creates sounds and textures that go beyond a typical saxophone; like the opening and closing of flaps and squawking dissonance.

These qualities don’t always make-up for the loose songwriting and his albums kind of feel like he’s just wanking off (felt this way when I saw him live too).

Ultimately it’s hard to deny the effectiveness of the textures he creates and those interested in experimental dark jazz should check him out. Stetson has a vision he’s able to perfectly articulate and in that way he’s a master at his craft.

Juju & Jordash – Sis-Boom-Bah!

★★☆☆☆ = Eh, fine

Sounds like?
Spacy techno

Thoughts

I appreciate the craft here as I understand it’s created live. The final product seemed a bit out there, nothing really to hook into. I also wasn’t into the berimbau like rhythm found on the first half.

This seems like it might be enjoyable in an open environment and I’m super curious about one of their live shows.

Tay-K – #SantanaWorld

★☆☆☆☆ = Bad

Sounds like?

Aggressive young rap

Thoughts
‘The Race’ shows high potential but I found the rest of the album lacking. Flows are never as memorable and I dislike the negative machismo.

Ambrose Akinmusire – A Rift In Decorum (Live At The Village Vanguard)

★★★☆☆ = Good!

Sounds like?
Modern jazz that is rooted in tradition but veers into tasteful experimental deconstructions.

Moods
Downtown jazz

Thoughts
Impressive stuff, wholeheartedly suggest this to fans of modern jazz.

I need to look up the style this is called but I feel this is part of a broader move forward for jazz. His compositions follow a general pattern with a somber melodic start to these songs that veers into intense free jazz like breakdowns. They illustrate a masterful knowledge of post-bop and mindful control on limits free jazz breakdowns.

I think what sets this apart (ie from Justin Brown’s latest) is the way the band keeps it together and doesn’t totally abandon a collective playing. Jazz, as a genre, evolved into something where people seemed to go free, fusion or forced to play as a revivalist. This record combines something of the free and revitalist approach but does so in a modern way that feels fresh.

Credit is due to the band and leadership of Ambrose. He’s a trumpet player who’s style I actually enjoy and is executing a vision perfectly. Justin Brown’s drumming is always impressive and his influence can’t be understated. I find he works very well as a member as a band rather than a leader; see my notes on nyeusi for more there.

Conflicted on what to rate this so gave it a 3 for now. Believe I need a bit more time to really set in with listening sessions where I can enjoy this. Overall a great record with fresh ideas, recommended.

Smokepurpp – Deadstar

★★☆☆☆ = Eh, fine

Sounds like?
Trademark SoundCloud rap: distorted beats with repetitive mumble raps

Moods
Young and obnoxious

Thoughts
Smokepurpp isn’t a very strong mc which is where the genre falls short as it lyrically lacks talent. However I think the production from SoundCloud rap is going to be big and a natural progression from Kanye’s industrial use on yeezus. For that reason I think albums like this, while bloated and too long, are worth a listen for those curious about raps future direction..

CCFX – CCFX

★★★★☆ = Quality release and suggested listening

Big sounding, chord-driven indie rock that borrows stylistic flourishes from shoegaze

Moods
CCFX

Tight gem of an EP. A well done update on 90s shoegaze styles.
