Mizan K – Dark Blue

★★★☆☆ = Good!

What’s it sound like?

Dark modern r&b

Thoughts
Basic recordings, it seems to be just piano, her and some production; typically a loop with a disconnected low-key vibe. She kind of mumble sings, like a stoned Alicia Keys, but what lacks in vocal range she makes up for in sincerity and memorable songwriting.

‘Looking for’ kicks things off well, and is probably the most accessible track, but I enjoy the whole ep.

Don’t DJ – Musique Acephale

★★★☆☆ = Good!

What’s it sound like?

Percussive, almost tribal, deep house

Thoughts
These tracks are lush productions with a relatively high tempo that keeps the whole thing moving well. This opens up after multiple plays and requires a patient listener to get lost in the hypnotic rhythm for subtle rewards. Not accessible in other words.

Liked pornoire, evolve.

Show Me The Body – Body War

⭐⭐⭐⭐

What’s it sound like?

A hardcore punk trio playing metal rap.

Thoughts

bursting with ideas and energy, this is a modern post hardcore classic. One of the best implementations of metal rap since RATM I can think of

Suso Sáiz – Odisea

⭐⭐

I’m not a huge ambient fan so it feels wrong reviewing a career spanning collection for an artist I’m not familiar with (as opposed to a curated best-of). Still I enjoyed the tracks with vocal loops like Un Hombre Oscuro and Sue Que Estas Ahi, as well as a very pretty The Ten Heads of Someone and proto-vaporwave Suelo Para Pisar. There are a number of new-agey tracks haven’t aged as well.

I can only ever promote documents like this that breathe new life into forgotten artists. Music from memory has an interesting outlet I’ll continue to explore.

Parquet Courts – Human Performance

⭐⭐⭐

I really like this band and support their style of punk, owing a lot to 80s influences like the replacements and feelies. Lyrically it has a well-read feel that I find is missing with today’s lyricists.

I can see spending more time with this album and liking it more in time, definitely a band I’d like to see live.
