The Cure – Three Imaginary Boys

★★★☆☆ = Good!

Sounds like?

Basic post punk

Moods

Of importance to those in their 20s

Thoughts

Need to revisit this, liked a bunch of the songs on the first half though the 2nd half waivered. I think my experience with the Cure would be very different had I been discovering them as they were releasing material.

As someone most familiar with their ‘greatest hits’ this is a curious listen. They're remarkably stripped down and feel like a young post-punk band with a certain rawness I appreciate. Less dramatic then their later material, still just as emotional.

Drinks – Hippo Lite

★★☆☆☆ = Eh, fine

What’s it sound like?
Bare indie art rock

Thoughts

I like it, backended with simple guitar chords or melodies, the album seems to float through a variety of ideas. Vocals typically repeat a catchy mantra of some sort.

Deliberately strange, the album gets a little tired and pretentious towards the end, nothing I really want to come back to.

The Fall – This Nation’s Saving Grace

★★★★☆ = Quality release and suggested listening

What’s it sound like?

Dive bar erudite rantings over raw distorted jangly 80s rock

Thoughts

Might just be the quintessential 80s post-punk album.

Daniele Luppi,Parquet Courts – Milano

★★★☆☆ = Good!

What’s it sound like?

Indie, alt, art house punk. The opposite of overly produced, raw but articulate.

Thoughts

I like this band and promote the type of rock their making: straightforward pop with witty lyrics. I appreciate their not hiding behind layers of electronic mess. Karen O adds a good element lyrically to songs like flush.

Solid album.

Gang of Youths – Go Farther In Lightness

⭐⭐⭐

What’s it sound like?
Indie rock. Big and anthemic at times, like a poor man’s Arcade Fire imitating Bruce.

Thoughts
There’s a bunch of good tracks on here and this band shows promise. They’ve got a knack for writing pop songs but I couldn’t help but think the lyrics felt topically limited, as if written by a dramatic teenager.

I’m being overly critical this is a great album with a number of memorable moments, recommended.

Parquet Courts – Human Performance

⭐⭐⭐

I really like this band and support their style of punk, owing a lot to 80s influences like the replacements and feelies. Lyrically it has a well-read feel that I find is missing with today’s lyricists.

I can see spending more time with this album and liking it more in time, definitely a band I’d like to see live.
