Traffic – The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys

★★☆☆☆ = Eh, fine

Sounds like?

70's rock with a rhythmic Latin element, soulful, long prog rock structures

Moods

Light up or leave me alone

Thoughts

I've saved a few tracks to playlists but this isn't the type of thing I plan on revisiting much in the future. The title track is well regarded by critics. It's good, especially through its composition and phases, but a long one at almost 12 minutes.

Something always feels a little square with Traffic records, can't put my hands on it. Might be the flute. Still hard to deny their ability and this has that 'classic' sound that only this era can produce.

Dire Straits – Love Over Gold

★★☆☆☆ = Eh, fine

Sounds like?

Classic radio rock

Moods

Soundtrack for driving across Midwestern landscapes

Thoughts

Aside from the tasteful guitar work on the second half of ‘telegraph road’ I wasn't into this. Songs felt overly long with few rewarding moments.

It’s A Beautiful Day – Live At The Fillmore ’68

★★☆☆☆ = Eh, fine

What’s it sound like?
Lively 60s rock band (think dead and the band) with strings.

Thoughts
It’s OK but overall they aren’t up to their peers. I think this would’ve been a blast live but doesn’t hold up to the test of time.

Alice Cooper – Love It To Death

★★☆☆☆ = Eh, fine

What’s it sound like?

‘Hard’ classic rock

Thoughts

Aside from 18 I’m not familiar with Alice Cooper’s catalog so I was looking forward to this when I saw it was high on WFMUs most played albums list. This album starts off as solid barebones rock and roll. It recounts the doors (black juju), and a forebearer to chord driven punk like the Ramones (Long way to go), sounds of Iggy pop and Black Sabbath are definitely at play.

Unfortunately it feels slightly watered down from those greats and it begins to show itself as the album wears on; I just don’t find it to be a great listen. Hard to write as I know this was influential to many but to my ears it just doesn’t stand the test of time.
