Elza Soares – A Mulher Do Fim Do Mundo

★★★☆☆ = Good!

Sounds like?
Samba Punk

Moods
Scorching evening on the esplanade

Thoughts
A curious record, original to my ears. I’ve always enjoyed elements of samba but its a genre that seems to appeal to purists and is stuck in the past, all roads leading to Jobim. Here the band and writing has a punk direction (of the south american variety) but with a samba flavor. She was 80 when she record this so there is an element of maturity. It’s this juxtaposition of such a mature voice being coupled with an edgy sound that gives it the appeal. I’ve often felt frustrated by the mellowing of artists catalogs as they get older so it’s nice to hear something where someone is pushing themselves in a younger direction.

I’ll be honest this isn’t the type of thing I plan on revisiting much but there’s something about the sound that I find interesting. Worth a listen.

Curtis Knight & The Squires – You Can’t Use My Name – The RSVP / PPX Sessions

★★☆☆☆ = Eh, fine

Sounds like?
R&B / electric blues

Moods
Rainy day woman take me away

Thoughts
There’s effectively two parts to this: R&B tracks written by Curtis Knight and a handful of instrumentals written by Hendrix. I like the instrumentals but wasn’t into the vocal tracks written by Curtis. Stick with Hendrix’s main catalog.

DJ Esco, Future – 56 Nights

★★★☆☆ = Good!

Sounds like?
Future’s ATL trap style at his darkest and highest

Moods
Nocturnal, top of the world and nothing to lose

Thoughts
Future at his best: exploring dark escapist thoughts over gritty heavy booming Southside productions.

One of his better mixtapes.

Future – Beast Mode

★★☆☆☆ = Eh, fine

Sounds like?
Future’s trademark flow over Zaytovens piano focused production

Moods
ATL nodding

Thoughts
Some standout tracks from Future’s prolific years. Zaytovens production works though is a little too happy for Future’s sadness.

Death Grips – Fashion Week (Instrumentals)

★★☆☆☆ = Eh, fine

What’s it sound like?

Industrial instrumental electro, a modern house version of prime-NIN.

Thoughts
The instrumentals are fine Death grips fans will obviously miss MC Ride who is in all other death grips releases. Has its moments but nothing I felt like revisiting.

Empress Of – Me

★★☆☆☆ = Eh, fine

What’s it sound like?

Female fronted synth pop

Thoughts

All the pieces are there for me to love but this album just doesn’t do it for me, the songwriting felt dull and repetitive.

She’s got a fantastic voice so am curious to hear more.

4th Coming – Strange Things: 1970 – 1974

★★★★☆ = Quality release and suggested listening

What’s it sound like?

Funky bluesy r&b

Thoughts
A soulful thread is at the heart of this great album, weaving together a bit of everything from the era including folk and country (things I don’t usually like but are done well here). There’s not a bad track here, reminds me of a funky version of the band.

Raury – All We Need

★★★☆☆ = Good!

What’s it sound like?

A blend of pop, hip hop, acoustic songwriter, alternative, r&b

Thoughts

Instrumentation and songwriting is really good, he’s clearly plugged in given some of the features on this; points for pulling from the right influences. Engaged by the variety of styles, I enjoyed the first seven or so, he’s at his best when he’s evoking Andre 3000 ala forbidden knowledge.

I feel he needs a bit more time to grow as a lyricist as he raps about the right topics but lacks lyrical wit. The album is long winded and his altruistic preaching feels disconnected and unrelatable.
