MJ Cole – Sincere

★★★☆☆ = Good!

Sounds like?

UK garage meets cheesy house

Moods

A Y2K party in London

Thoughts

An uneven album. The bad tracks feature Elisabeth Troy doing these overly polished house vocals that lack character; would serve well as Muzak at a slightly dated 'hip' hotel lounge.

However the good is REALLY good. These tracks are generally more 'raw' garage like Sincere and Desperado. Memorable melodies that capture a hectic urban pulse.

Emperor Penguin – Mysterious Pony

★★★☆☆ = Good!

What’s it sound like?
A record made by a band as if it’s collected from a bunch of older sampled vinyl.

Thoughts
Starts off with a good energy, drumlines a bit more aggressive and the additional layers now encompass not just keys and guitar but strings, flute, xylophone.

Love the dre interlude on burnt sienna! And Stanley Clarke on Playful elements like that make this feel much more well crafted and like a well thought out effort from a band.

⭐⭐⭐

Sounds like a psychedelic Portishead playing Stereolab covers, recommended.
