Material – Secret Life

★★★☆☆ = Good!

What’s it sound like?
80s punky jam art rock

Thoughts
Interesting and full of energy, slightly abrasive at times which gives it a nice edge. Sounds like a number of things from the era but manages to carve a distinct sound. Little in the way of structure, seems a whole bunch of noodling thrown at basic hi hat rushes and bass lines, at times flea funky or punky.

Not a perfect album, the later tracks aren’t as strong, this is still an interesting predecessor to modern dance punk like LCD Soundsystem. Draws from 80s talking heads at their most stoned.

Deetron – DJ-Kicks

★★★☆☆ = Good!

What’s it sound like?

Energetic house mix

Thoughts

A dynamic mix that builds in intensity. This is decidedly modern house but incorporates a number of styles and takes large influence from 90s golden age. The later half isn’t quite as good, track selection trades sexy for energy that I don’t particularly like. Ends with a perfect pair. I think this would play well with mature fans looking for something fresh.

My one complaint is he hops between styles and songs too frequently, never really settling on anything for longer than a minute. At times this is fun but I do wish some songs would’ve been stretched out more.

Roy Ayers – Virgin Ubiquity (Unreleased Recordings 1976-1981)

★★☆☆☆ = Eh, fine

What’s it sound like?

Roy Ayers signature funk jazz constructed with pop/r&b vocalists.

Thoughts

I’m not intimately familiar with his catalog but this veers to the lighter side as an r&b album. I found the singers lacking in personality but roys funk is in full effect. I like the instrumental tracks like green and gold featuring a solo vibraphone.

Nothing special, he’s got better stuff.

Patrice Rushen – Now

★★★★☆ = Quality release and suggested listening

What’s it sound like?

80’s Low-key funk / r&b.

Thoughts

Show’s it’s age at times but this is top notch songwriting, has a chill purple-one vibe to the tracks at time. This is the first album I listened to of hers but the songs are generally sparse: synth, drum machine, bass, lyrics. She’s super effective with the synths creating spacey soundscapes or jazzy solos (she’s a piano player). Lyrically she’s got a certain authenticity that penetrates the sometimes too precise instrumentation.

Mostly good but some real standouts with: feels so real, each his own, gotta find it.

Greeen Linez – Izu King Street

⭐⭐⭐

Vaporwave inspired electro with a constant ‘house’ bump. This is probably their best and most accessible album so far.
